Our bodies are designed to flush many harmful toxins out through our lymphatic system, a good portion of which is located in the tissue around our breasts and extends to under our arms. When we interfere with that free flow of sweat and continual purging the body is left with these loads of damaging or harmful components with it’s primary way of safely escorting it out of the body blocked. Did you know that fat acts as a safe deposit vault for toxins? The body views fatty tissue as the least harmful place to stow toxins. And, for women (and some men) the closest fatty tissue to the armpit sweat evacuation pathway are our breasts. After years of blocking off normal sweating and years and years of toxins being stowed into the fatty breast tissue is it any wonder that parabens, aluminum, phthalates, triclosan, glycol, and other harmful ingredients of commercial antiperspirant deodorants are considered a serious contribution to many cases of breast cancer? It is a simple thing to change a part of your daily routine that could have a big impact! It certainly seems to help a lot to eat a vegan diet, and even more so if you eat organic as much as possible, then it stands to reason you have less toxins to filter out through sweat and other forms of toxin elimination. I have also heard supplementing with magnesium eliminates perspiration odor too.
It
is very important to me to use only products that are non-toxic and
non-carcinogenic. Many scientific studies have proven these ingredients
increase growth of cancer, and are present in an estimated 97% of cosmetics and
personal care items, particularly deodorant. Most commercial antiperspirant/deodorants
are loaded with toxins and carcinogens: aluminum, parabens, propylene glycol, phthalates,
and atriclosan. I do not want products containing gluten or animal
derivatives, or that have been tested on animals. For these reasons, I make my
own deodorant from edible ingredients! I love this stuff, and I think you will too!
This is made from a creamy
anti-fungal base of coconut oil, stabilized with arrowroot powder, and
with baking soda added for it’s odor binding capabilities. You have
complete control over the fragrance or if it even has one. How beautiful is
that? Keep in mind when using this, it is not an antiperspirant.
Your body needs to detoxify so we don’t want to block that, now do we? You will
perspire less, you will not stink!
Ingredients
1/3 cup organic coconut oil (solid state)
1/3 cup baking soda
1/4 cup organic arrowroot powder (or tapioca starch) *NEVER substitute corn starch, your body will absorb GMOs, 95% of all corn products are GMO!
5-10 drops of essential oil (optional)
Instructions
Mix the baking soda and arrowroot powder in a glass bowl.
Add the coconut oil (do not warm or melt it) and use a fork or pastry blender to thoroughly blend it into the dry ingredients.
Add 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil and blend completely. (this step is optional, but lovely - my personal favorite is lavender)
Add more arrowroot powder/baking soda if needed until the texture is about the same consistency as commercial deodorant.
Scoop the mixture into a small jar and store at room temperature. (Refrigeration may be required during summer months and warmer weather because the coconut oil will melt at 76 degrees.)
To apply, use your fingers to scoop out a small amount of the deodorant and massage it into your armpits daily or as needed.

You can buy empty plastic push-up containers to store your deodorant in, but why subject yourself to BPA's and add to the landfills when you can use a glass jar and be green?

Shelley,
ReplyDeleteWow, what a journey you've been on! I'm inspired by your passion for your gluten-free vegan lifestyle. I have tried and tried, and I have used every excuse in the book to go back to eating "junk". I even had a mastectomy because of an extremely large and rare tumor, and I can't stay on the eating plan that I KNOW is the healthiest for me. I was vegan for about 6 months and cured my bursitis, so I KNOW it works. I'm putting your blog on my favorites bar so it will be a daily help to me. Thanks again!
